Why Your Students Need SEL
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, demonstrate empathy, build and maintain healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL is more than just a curriculum—it’s a holistic approach to education that equips individuals to navigate life’s complexities with confidence and compassion.
Each box contains five books, each dedicated to one of the five core SEL competencies. Every student receives their own box for the academic year. Throughout the year, teachers can guide students through the stories and facilitate the corresponding exercises from the grade-specific teacher's guide.
1. Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the ability to recognize and understand your own emotions, thoughts, and values. It’s about being in tune with what makes you tick, knowing your strengths and areas for growth, and having a grounded sense of self-worth. When students develop self-awareness, they can better manage their emotions, set realistic goals, and make decisions that align with their true selves.

2. Self-Management
Self-management is the ability to regulate your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations. It involves managing stress, controlling impulses, and staying motivated to persevere through challenges. With strong self-management skills, students can remain focused, calm, and organized—even when the going gets tough—turning potential roadblocks into stepping stones.
3. Social Awareness
Social awareness is understanding and empathizing with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures. It’s about seeing the world through someone else’s eyes, recognizing social cues, and responding with kindness and respect. Students with strong social awareness can build connections, appreciate diversity, and contribute positively to their communities.

4. Relationship Skills
Relationship skills are the tools needed to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with others. This includes communicating clearly, listening actively, cooperating, resisting inappropriate social pressure, and resolving conflicts constructively. Mastering these skills helps students collaborate effectively, build trust, and foster supportive relationships that last a lifetime.

5. Responsible Decision-Making
Responsible decision-making is making thoughtful, ethical, and constructive choices about personal and social behavior. It involves considering the well-being of oneself and others, evaluating the consequences of various actions, and making decisions that align with personal and community values. When students practice responsible decision-making, they learn to navigate challenges with integrity and make choices that contribute to their long-term success and happiness.
