Bringing Language to Life: Teaching EFL Through SEL

Our series of ESL books integrates the European Common Framework (ECF) with Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) to offer a unique and effective approach to language education. Rather than following a traditional language instruction format, our curriculum uses SEL as the foundation for teaching English. This method not only makes language learning more engaging but also helps students develop essential life skills while building linguistic proficiency.

Research shows that children learn best when they connect new knowledge to real-life contexts. By embedding ESL instruction within the framework of SEL, we provide students with a meaningful and relevant subject-based learning experience. This approach allows them to naturally absorb language while engaging with stories and activities that teach emotional understanding, relationship-building, and responsible decision-making.
Each book in our series is designed to teach one of the five core SEL competencies—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making—while simultaneously guiding students through the appropriate ESL level based on the ECF. As students explore these competencies, they learn English through scenarios and exercises that reflect real-life situations, making the language more accessible and practical.
Teaching ESL through SEL offers numerous benefits:
-
Enhanced Engagement: Learning through SEL-related stories and activities keeps students motivated and engaged by showing the direct application of language skills in their daily lives.
-
Deeper Understanding: Subject-based learning enables students not only to acquire language skills but also to develop a deeper understanding of the concepts and values being taught, leading to more meaningful and lasting knowledge.
-
Holistic Development: This approach nurtures both linguistic and emotional intelligence, helping students become well-rounded individuals who are not only proficient in English but also equipped with essential life skills.
-
Practical Application: By learning language in context rather than isolation, students are better prepared to use English in real-world situations. This practical approach fosters greater confidence and fluency.
